It is a mysterious place, which the six-year-old Iris, who arrives in a coffin, first has to get used to – a boarding school for little girls, enclosed by a high wall, with lamps that light the way through the forest, and daily ballet lessons. Strict rules apply: disobedience is punished and anyone who tries to escape must stay forever. But there are also joyful moments playing in the meadows and in the water. A feeling of eeriness characterizes Lucile Hadžihalilović's fairy tale-like stylized feature debut, an adaptation of a story by Frank Wedekind that explores the imaginary space of childhood in a dreamlike and idiosyncratic way with gliding camera movements, strictly framed Cinemascope images, and gloomy sounds.
